What is Real Time Passenger Information?
RTPI is a state-of-the-art system that provides accurate information as to when the next bus is due to arrive.
How does it work?
A satellite tracking device, fitted to each bus, lets the RTPI system to know where it is. The system then calculates how long it will take the bus to arrive at each of the stops along the route. The system constantly transfers this information to the displays at the bus stops, where they are installed, or to the NextBus web pages or by text message to a mobile phone. The information displayed is shown either in real time, for example ‘6 mins’, or scheduled time, such as ‘11:06’.
What is displayed on the screens?
The display or mobile device will show the next departures from that stop. If the bus is within 2 minutes of the stop the display will show “Due”. If the display shows a number of minutes then the system is tracking a vehicle on that route and has estimated how long before it arrives at your stop. If an hours and minutes time is shown, then the bus is not currently tracked and the scheduled or timetable time is used.
How does it help me?
As the system can track the precise location of each bus, it can tell whether the bus is running on time, early or late. Not only is this information available at the bus stop to give you peace of mind, but it is also available before you’ve left your home or office on the web or on your mobile phone so you don’t have to be at the stop too long before your bus arrives. It also gives the operator a chance to make operational changes to buses whilst on route to ensure reliability.
